JOB TITLE: HEAD USHER

HOURS OF WORK: Casual, irregular hours including evenings, weekends and holidays as event bookings and scheduling dictate.

REPORTS TO: Front of House & Volunteer Coordinator

MAIN FUNCTIONS:

The successful accomplishment of this position’s responsibilities directly contributes to the overall image and operation of Aultsville Theatre throughout the year.

The Head Usher, under the guidance and direction of the Front of House & Volunteer Coordinator, is responsible for the efficient operation of all audience related activities and the activities of the volunteer ushers on the night of an event. 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

General

  • Provide superb customer service to all persons attending the theatre (including but not limited to theatre clients, patrons and visitors).
  • Enforce the theatre policies and procedures that relate to the front of house and audience services. (ie. Health and Safety, babes in arms). 
  • Attend any meetings and/or training as required. 
  • Observe the position dress code by wearing a standard theatre black pant and Aultsville Theatre branded yellow golf shirt (provided) while on shift, and comfortable closed-toed shoes. A lanyard bearing the Head Usher’s name and position will be issued to be worn for all shifts.

During an event:

  • Perform duties as assigned by the Front of House & Volunteer Coordinator, including overseeing the volunteer ushers and their assigned position. Help ensure all is working to maximum potential and ensure the efficient running of the FOH.
  • Attend pre-show usher briefing sessions designed to ensure all FOH staff are well informed of the event details and requirements. 
  • Care and supervision of the public before, during and after performances to ensure their comfort, enjoyment and safety. 
  • Pay attention to customer care for patrons with disabilities. 
  • Assist with the overseeing of the Audience Services amenities, including coat check, water sales and lost and found. Provide direction and information to patrons and visitors. 
  • Assist with the set up and tear down of the front of house (ie. tables, chairs, signs, ticket boxes, coat room tickets, etc).
  • Understand event security needs. Coordinate with the FOH & Volunteer Coordinator and the contract event security for audience and artist safety. 
  • Assist with the execution of receptions, special events, intermissions, artist meet-and-greets, merchandise sales, informational/promotional displays, and other pre/post-event activities. 
  • Ensure that the ambiance, appearance, and general condition of lobby, auditorium, restrooms and other patron accessible areas of the facility are appropriate. 
  • Assist with any marketing materials (ie. programs, inserts and/or surveys) necessary and available for distribution at events. 

Administration

  • Assist with the Front of House Event Report, outlining any extraordinary occurrences at the event; running times, an accounting of employees’ time worked, concessions and merchandise report, accident reports, facilities maintenance items, and other event related items of note for all events. 
  • Accurate reporting and handling of cash/floats.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Working conditions:

  • Casual, irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Will be provided a shared work place in the theatre’s administrative offices for hours/days worked at the theatre.
  • Receive and respond to, in a timely manner, electronic (email) correspondence regarding theatre activities (ie. Event and shift scheduling)
  • Physical demand – moderate to high; constant standing and walking throughout shift during events; sitting/standing for long periods of time; frequent lifting and carrying (ie. cases of waters, stanchions, ticket boxes, signs); frequent ascending or descending of ramps and stairs. 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum one year of experience in a high-volume, fast-paced customer service atmosphere.
  • Experience working in a theatre environment will be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and with diverse groups.
  •  Ability to handle stressful situations calmly, rationally and tactfully.
  • Excellent communication skills, problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Bilingualism will be considered an asset

Pay rate: $20.63/hour
